Een van de belangrijkste onderdelen van het immuunsysteem is de darmmicrobiota.  70% van de immuuncellen bevindt zich namelijk in de darmen.1,2 Bij de opbouw én het in balans houden van de darmmicrobiota speelt voeding een belangrijke rol. Onder andere vanwege de verschillende en unieke ‘biotica’ die in voeding kunnen zitten.

De eerste 1000 dagen

Een goede opbouw van de darmmicrobiota in de eerste 1000 dagen is belangrijk. Een gebalanceerde darmmicrobiota heeft een gunstige invloed op de ontwikkeling van het immuunsysteem.3,4 Daarnaast is de darmmicrobiota ook van invloed op de gezondheid gedurende de rest van het leven.5-9

Bij sommige kinderen is het evenwicht in de darmmicrobiota al vroeg in het leven verstoord (dysbiose). Deze disbalans kan ontstaan door antibiotica tijdens de zwangerschap of vroeg in het leven10-13, een keizersnede of bij allergieën in de directe familie14. Om de opbouw van een gunstige darmmicrobiota te ondersteunen, is de juiste voeding essentieel.

Pre-, pro- en postbiotica

In het vroege leven ontwikkelen de darmmicrobiota en het immuunsysteem van een zuigeling zich razendsnel. De juiste voeding ondersteunt de opbouw van de darmmicrobiota. Borstvoeding is de gouden standaard. Het bevat onder andere verschillende soorten biotica:

  • Prebiotica: Een substraat dat selectief wordt gebruikt door gastheer micro-organismen met een gezondheidsvoordeel15

  • Probiotica: Levende microorganismen die, bij toediening in voldoende hoeveelheden, een gezondheidsvoordeel voor de gastheer opleveren16

  • Postbiotica: Preparaat van levensloze micro-organismen en/of hun metabolieten, wat een gezondheidsvoordeel biedt aan de gastheer15

Biotica heeft invloed op de darmmicrobiota

Prebiotica komen van nature voor in moedermelk onder de vorm van humane melk oligosacchariden (HMO). Ze vormen een voedingsbodem voor gunstige bacteriën in de darmen en zorgen er onder andere voor dat goede bacteriën er de overhand krijgen. Het gaat dus om het samenspel. Wanneer specifieke goede bacteriën prebiotica fermenteren, ontstaan er bioactieve stoffen, zoals organische zuren en andere metabolieten. Deze stoffen worden postbiotica genoemd.

De vorming van postbiotica is afhankelijk van de specifieke bacteriestammen en het fermentatieproces; niet alle probiotica dragen hier in dezelfde mate aan bij. Bij Nutricia wordt dit proces doelgericht toegepast. Door de zorgvuldige selectie van twee specifieke melkzuurbacteriën – Streptococcus thermophilus 065 en Bifidobacterium breve C50 – wordt een uniek fermentatieproces gestart. Dit proces leidt tot de vorming van postbiotica die bijdragen aan de ondersteuning van de vertering en het immuunsysteem. Prebiotica voeden dus selectieve goede bacteriën, die via fermentatie postbiotica genereren en zo bijdragen aan een gezonde darmomgeving.17–24

De voordelen van een gezonde darmmicrobiota

Als de darmmicrobiota in balans is, krijgen ziekteverwekkers minder kans. In balans betekent dat er veel goede bacteriën aanwezig zijn en weinig slechte. Maar de darmmicrobiota doet veel meer. Het zorgt voor de productie van vitamines (vitamine K bijvoorbeeld), het speelt een rol in de vertering van voedsel, het is belangrijk voor de werking van de darm (peristaltiek) en het versterkt het darmslijmvlies en vormt daarmee de natuurlijke barrière tegen ziekteverwekkers. Andersom geldt: bij een disbalans (dysbiose) is er een grotere kans op infecties25 en op darmproblemen zoals krampjes. Zelfs het risico op astma of een allergie wordt groter bij een onevenwichtige darmmicrobiota.25,26

Zuigelingenvoeding met biotica

Ook sommige merken flesvoeding bevatten deze ‘biotica familie’. Nutricia doet al meer dan 130 jaar onderzoek naar de meest optimale voeding voor zuigelingen.
